In accepting the multiple agencies at play in the distribution, discussion and devolution of the work, I am developing strategies to instigate decentralised and diverse dialogues. I’m working beyond the deeply subjective and personal, towards an intersubjective cultural space – art historical intersections, symbolic colour, ancient contemporary, shared narratives and abstract thought. It feels significant to recognise and somehow participate in an inevitable situation where painting becomes an interpreted surface.
For example, in the Writing Painting work, Archetype Paintings are exchanged for words. I’m interested in the generative aspects that resonate from this gesture; and how a painting initiates a conversation, is overwritten by text and in turn becomes recontextualised.
